When Amanda first approached me about photographing her home birth, I won’t lie, I was a little intimidated. Not only had I never witnessed a birth, but birth photography was something new to me as well! Though it was a new concept to me, it was also very exciting and interesting.
Her husband Andy called me around 3:30am, letting me know that Amanda was in labour. In the 30 minutes it took me to arrive, baby Niah was born! Although I did miss the birth itself, I was able to stick around and capture some of her first moments in the world.
Along with her wonderful team of midwives, Amanda had her husband, Mom, and sister by her side for her home birth. Niah’s big sister Zoe slept through the whole thing, and was excited to see that “Mommy had a baby!” when she woke up.
Being able to witness a home birth was really incredible for me. I am so happy that I live in a time where women are educated about options available to them at birth, opening up new opportunities for people like me who are interested in photographing many new things.
Here are a few of my favourite moments from this incredible experience.
